DAVID MARSDEN AWARD

The European Dystonia Federation invites submission of papers for 

the David Marsden Award 2011.

The David Marsden Award was presented for the first time in 2003 by the European Dystonia Federation. Professor David Marsden (1935 – 1998) was one of the leading neurologists in Europe and the Federation wishes to honour the enormous part he played in developing knowledge of and interest in dystonia.

The Award of €2,500 is intended to encourage research into dystonia in all European countries, especially by young scientists.

General Rules

• The David Marsden Award will be presented every two years.
• The Award sum is € 2,500 for papers (i.e. manuscripts for original publication – no abstracts) on either aetiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and therapies on dystonia or the psycho-social effects on people with dystonia.
• Applicants should be under 40 years of age.
• Submitted papers may have been published within the last two years.
• Unsuccessful applicants may re-present their papers in the following year, if fundamental new scientific findings are involved.
• The applicant should be the first author.
• The research must have taken place within Geographical Europe.

Procedure

• Papers should be submitted by email to the EDF Secretariat with a short Curriculum Vitae and a declaration that the paper has not been submitted for any other scientific awards.
• The deadline for submissions is 31th May 2011.
• The evaluation of papers will be carried out by the EDF Medical Advisory Board
• The final decision on the Award Winner will be made by the EDF Board.
• The Award will be presented formally at the EFNS 2009 Congress in Florence, Italy and also at the EDF General Assembly 2009.  At both venues, the Award winner will give a presentation of his/her paper.

David-Marsden-Award 2009
The David Marsden Award 2009 was awarded to Dr. Ana Djarmati and Dr. Susanne A. Schneider, Schilling Department of Clinical and Molecular Neurogenetics at the Department of Neurology, University of Lübeck, Germany for their paper “Mutations in THAP1 (DYT6) and generalised dystonia with prominent spasmodic dysphonia: a genetic screening study”.

The David Marsden Award 2007 was awarded to Dr. Mirta Fiorio, Department of Neurological and Vision Sciences, University of Verona, at the EFNS Congress in Brussels, for her Paper “Defective temporal processing of sensory stimuli in DYT1 mutation carriers: a new endophenotype of dystonia?”

The David Marsden Award 2005 was awarded to Dr. Victor Candia, Collegium Helveticum, Univ. and ETH Zürich, at the EFNS Congress in September in Athens, for his Paper “Effective Behavioral Treatment of Focal Hand Dystonia in Musicians alters Somatosensory Cortical Organization”
